HRF Co-Hosts European Parliament Briefing on Human Rights in Egypt

On 23 June 2026, the Egyptian Human Rights Forum co-hosted the first breakfast policy briefing of its kind on Egypt at the European Parliament in Brussels, focused on recent human rights developments and their implications for EU policy. The discussion brought together Egyptian and regional human rights defenders and experts from inside the country and the diaspora to examine the deterioration of civic space, arbitrary detention and prison conditions, due process violations, restrictions on independent civil society, media and political opposition, transnational repression, women’s rights and gender-based repression, and the protection concerns facing refugees and migrants. Participants also assessed the human rights implications of EU migration cooperation and discussed how the EU could adopt a more coherent, rights-based approach by integrating clear benchmarks and safeguards into financial assistance, political engagement, and cooperation under the EU–Egypt strategic partnership. The briefing took place following the EU–Egypt Association Council, amid discussions on the second tranche of EU Macro-Financial Assistance, and ahead of the European Parliament’s planned DROI mission to Egypt.
