{"id":4613,"date":"2025-11-13T16:38:43","date_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:38:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egyptianforum.org\/?p=4613"},"modified":"2025-11-13T16:38:43","modified_gmt":"2025-11-13T16:38:43","slug":"european-parliament-adopts-first-ever-resolution-on-transnational-repression","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egyptianforum.org\/en\/european-parliament-adopts-first-ever-resolution-on-transnational-repression\/","title":{"rendered":"European Parliament Adopts First-Ever Resolution on Transnational Repression"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The European Parliament today adopted its first-ever resolution on transnational repression (TNR), marking a historic milestone in the EU\u2019s acknowledgment of and commitment to combating \u2014 this growing global phenomenon.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The resolution, adopted by a strong majority, is based on a comprehensive study prepared by the Committee on Foreign Affairs (AFET), which cited the Egyptian Human Rights Forum\u2019s (EHRF) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/egyptianforum.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Transnational-repression-ENG.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research and documentation <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">on cases of transnational repression targeting Egyptian human rights defenders and political activists abroad. Based on EHRF\u2019s contribution and input from other experts, Egypt was identified as one of the top perpetrators of transnational repression and featured as one of the four case studies in the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">EHRF also submitted formal input to the AFET report and co-organised a public <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/egyptianforum.org\/en\/ehrf-co-hosts-european-parliament-panel-on-transnational-repression-by-mena-states\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">event <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at the European Parliament in June 2025 with MEP Chlo\u00e9 Ridel to shed light on the widespread use of transnational repression by authorities in the MENA region.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This resolution represents a significant step forward in the EU\u2019s institutional recognition of the threats faced by exiled activists and journalists, reinforcing the need for a coordinated European response to protect those targeted beyond their borders.
