{"id":2562,"date":"2023-11-23T23:34:35","date_gmt":"2023-11-23T23:34:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/egyptianforum.org\/?p=2562"},"modified":"2024-01-17T23:36:10","modified_gmt":"2024-01-17T23:36:10","slug":"alaa-abd-el-fattah-letter-to-the-united-nations-working-group-on-arbitrary-detention","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/egyptianforum.org\/en\/alaa-abd-el-fattah-letter-to-the-united-nations-working-group-on-arbitrary-detention\/","title":{"rendered":"Alaa Abd El-Fattah \u2013 Letter to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Dear Members of the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention,<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">We, the undersigned 34 freedom of expression and human rights organisations, are writing regarding the recent submission to the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) filed on behalf of the award-winning writer and activist <\/span><b><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alaa Abd El-Fattah, <\/span><\/b><span data-contrast=\"none\">a British-Egyptian citizen.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">On 14 November 2023, Alaa Abd El-Fattah and his family filed an urgent appeal with the UNWGAD, <\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">submitting that his continuing detention in Egypt is arbitrary and contrary to international law.<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\"> Alaa Abd El-Fattah and his family are represented by an International Counsel team led by English barrister Can Ye\u011finsu.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">Alaa Abd-El Fattah has spent much of the past decade imprisoned in Egypt on charges related to his writing and activism and remains arbitrarily detained in Wadi al-Natrun prison and denied consular visits.
