“Women and the IMF: Accountability through Gender Impact Assessments”

As part of the IMF and World Bank Group’s 2024 Annual Meetings, the Egyptian Human Rights Forum (EHRF) co-sponsored an event titled “Women and the IMF: Accountability through Gender Impact Assessments” in collaboration with TIMEP, EFHR, ARI, HRW, Oxfam, CEWLA, MENAFEM, and other civil society organizations. This event underscored the urgent need for binding Gender Impact Assessments (GIAs) for all IMF programs to ensure that each program systematically anticipates and addresses its impact on women and girls, who are often disproportionately affected by economic reforms. Speakers highlighted that past IMF programs have frequently resulted in economic hardship that has disproportionately undermined the economic rights of women and girls, further reinforcing the need for these critical GIAs to reduce harm and promote gender equity.
